Yes. In India, content from a hosted trip is advertising. When a hotel, airline, tourism board or travel brand gives a creator a free stay, a flight, a reduced rate or a place on a fam trip, the content that follows should be labelled as a partnership. No fee needs to change hands. The hosted stay is the connection.
The good news: disclosing it well is easy, it protects everyone involved, and it does not cost the content any of its power.
Why does a free stay count as a partnership?
Because the rule looks at the relationship, not the invoice. ASCI's influencer guidelines ask for disclosure wherever there is a material connection between the advertiser and the creator, and that includes trips, stays, free products and barter as well as money. The Consumer Protection endorsement guidelines use the same idea.
The test is simple: would the audience weigh the recommendation differently if they knew about the arrangement? For a stay the property arranged, the answer is yes, so the label goes on.
A trip the creator planned and paid for, with no arrangement with any brand, is editorial and needs no label.
Why travel needs a little more care
A product deal usually comes with a contract and a fee, so the label is part of the paperwork. Hosted travel is often arranged more informally, over a message or an invitation, with no contract at all. That makes it easy for everyone to assume someone else has the label covered. Writing it into the invitation solves that.
What do the 2026 ASCI rules ask for?
The same as any paid campaign:
- Say it early in video. A short spoken line near the start, such as "the property hosted me for this stay", alongside the on-screen label.
- Keep the label on Stories. Visible for the full duration of each frame, not just the first.
- Put it up front. In the first lines of the caption, where it is seen without tapping "more".
- Use a clear label. The platform's paid partnership tag, or a plain "Ad", "Collaboration" or "Partnership". On its own, "hosted" or "invited" can leave viewers unsure what it means.
The platform tag covers the written label. Video also needs the spoken line, so plan for both.
Who is responsible for the label?
The brand and the creator share it. Under the consumer protection framework, the authority can fine advertisers and endorsers up to ₹10 lakh, and up to ₹50 lakh for repeat cases. In practice the best protection is a shared checklist, so the label is a deliverable both sides sign off, rather than a detail one side has to remember.
Does disclosure hurt performance?
Not for content with a point of view. Audiences understand that a creator in a resort villa in peak season was probably hosted. What they value is the creator's own judgement: which room to book, which hour to shoot from the terrace, what is worth the trip. "The hotel hosted me, and here is the one thing I would come back for" is a stronger line with the disclosure than without it.
That is positioning over integration in practice. Content that gives a real reason to go loses nothing by being open about how the trip happened.
What to put in the invite or contract
Four lines. If there is no contract, put them in the invitation email, because that email is the agreement.
- Name the connection. "This is a hosted collaboration, and content from it is advertising under ASCI guidelines."
- Specify the disclosure. Paid partnership tag on every post and Story, plus a spoken line early in any video.
- List it as a deliverable. Disclosure sits on the checklist with the reel and the Stories.
- Check together. Review the draft for the label, and look again a day after it goes live in case captions were edited.
If the stay comes with no required posts at all, the same label still applies to anything the creator chooses to share from it.
How Exif handles hosted stays
We brief every hosted stay, fam trip and barter collaboration as a partnership from the first message. Disclosure is written into the brief, checked on the draft and checked again once the content is live, and creators get the reasoning along with the rule. FAQ
Is a barter collaboration with a hotel an ad in India?
Yes. A free or discounted stay is a material connection under ASCI guidelines, so content from it should be labelled as a partnership, even when no money is paid.
Is tagging the hotel or writing "hosted by" enough?
Tagging the property is not a disclosure, and "hosted" alone can be unclear. Use the paid partnership tag or a plain "Ad" or "Collaboration" label up front, and add a spoken line early in any video.
Who is responsible if a hosted trip is not disclosed?
Responsibility is shared between the brand and the creator. The simplest safeguard is to make disclosure a listed deliverable that both sides check before and after posting.
